misplaced memory

1. A memory that exists vividly in the mind but cannot be confidently traced to its source, often leaving the individual unsure whether the event was experienced directly, witnessed, dreamed, imagined, or absorbed from media or others.

2. A mental file stored in the wrong directory — mistakenly filed under personal experience instead of dreams, fiction, or observation.

Note:
Unlike “false memory,” a misplaced memory may not be inaccurate — only misfiled. The content can be real; it’s the origin that’s uncertain. Think of it like dragging a file into the wrong folder: the data’s intact, just somewhere it shouldn’t be.

I have this misplaced memory of hiding in a church basement during a flood, but I think it might’ve been a dream… or maybe a scene from a movie?
