A preteen/teen (age between 11-16), who is both indie and goth. They will dress indie (in their own independant style), and probably have indie hair too. But their style will be darker than most indie kids. They will usually listen to:
Indie, alternative, rock, metal, alternative metal, screamo, gothic rock etc...
Most indie's, goth's and indie goth's are VERY against emo's/scene's. This is understandable because emo's/scene's "stole" indie style and turned it black. E.g.:
-> Converse
-> Black skinny jeans
-> Band tees
Plus, their used to be loads of good screamo bands, that felt the need to go emo to make money.
So NOT to confused with emo. They listen to indie and metal. Nothing wrong with that. As an indie/goth myself, I get along with indie/goth's, and just indie's and just goth's.
But if there's one thing none of us can stand, it's emo's/scene's.

Indie kids wear clothes from second hand shops, have an unfounded fascination in things like cassette tapes and vinyl, and often wear thick rimmed glasses.
The thing that makes their music "indie" is a mystery. Any type of music can be indie- rock, rap, bluegrass, etc. As long as the audience consists of old plaid and tight jeans, it is indie.

Get the Indie Kidsmug. Generally music with a more obscure sound. Indie music consists of musicians who aren't in it for the big label, but to make good music, or music they like. Genres include folk, rap, electronica, acoustic, etc.
Anybody who considers Modest Mouse to be an indie band is incredibly ignorant.
The genre should not be mistaken with "indie kids". (Who the hell labels themself as an indie kid, huh?)
Indie music doesn't ONLY consist of acoustic guitar, whiny voices, and shouldn't be mistaken with teenagers who wear black rimmed glasses, put the Juno album on repeat, wear converse, and hang out at Starbucks.
Try some Gregory and the Hawk, he Dreams of Sleep, Robbie Snell, Wesley Bunch.

Get the Indie Musicmug. An umbrella term for various non-commercial strains of rock and roll, separate from heavy metal's non-commercial artists. Its origins can be traced back to punk rock and post-punk of the late '70s and the early '80s. That non-commercial nature could stem from the outwardly ugly sound of the music, the wishes of the artist, the effeminacy of the music, etc. Indie rock is a wide umbrella, covering music, such as country/western or soft rock, that the punks would have rejected.

Get the indie rockmug. Indie Kids are not the pretentious college twats that shop at Hollister and Topshop. They are people with a love for individually produced media that show an interest in art and other similar forms of expression. This is perhaps because it is avoiding the rat-race, hence the 'indi' part of the identity. Despite the new forming popular beliefs stemming from British high school and College students, they are not part of popular culture, rather, the name 'indie' or 'hipster' has been taken to embody a different meaning. An indie kid may be seen as precocious, due to the fact that they have an extensive vocabulary and do not follow the mainstream, but, this is in fact the indie kids greatest asset. I will not name a 'famous indie', due to the fact that, if they are non-existent and have been sucked into the belief that they are being individual, whilst wearing outfits practically made of money. This is why Alexa Chung or Taylor Swift will never be indie. Contrary to popular belief, indie kids are not actually kids, they are usually in their late teens to their 30s and usually care about environmental issues such as Fracking. They express themselves how they want and are an interesting group of people as they value individual thought and opinion. This is why many indie's take up photography and playing an instrument.

Get the Indie Kidmug. Indie wanna be. Someone who chooses bands that are primarily rock that aren't technically listened to by everybody but are still quite popular (slipknot, stone sour, etc) and treats that band like they are the only ones who have ever heard of them.
