Emotive Hardcore is an offshoot from hardcore punk which formed in the late 80s and was played throughout the 90s. The term "emo" was coined to such bands like Rites of Spring and Embrace and other bands with a more melodic hardcore sound and expressive lyrics, although some later bands experimented with a softer indie alternative sound as well. You can also say it was a term to describe the "sound" of the DC area of the time. However, if you ask any of the members, they would highly disapprove of this term and most likely mock it.
Emo is not dying your hair black, piercing your lip, and it's certainly not cutting your wrist, that's just a trend. Emo is a music genre that started in the 90s and ended in the 90s.

Most of the people who call themselves “emo” and attention seek are fakes. A real emo is someone who is very sensitive and overreacts to things.
Emos also either heavily express themselves through music, art, writing and many more things OR like me they hide their emotions and feelings because people judge them and they are shy.

Emo stands for emotional hardcore, and started with bands like Rites of Spring in the 1980s. It then dipoed in popularity until bands like Dashboard Confessional and Fall Out Boy re-invented emo into subgenres like emo-pop amd indie-emo. It does not mean cutting, being depressed or gay.

Emo is a style related to a dark subculture however emos aren't Goths nor Scenes which most people confused them with.
The emo wording itself comes from a short–cut for EMOtional meaning emos are a more sensitive version of a dark subculture, aother misconception being that all emos cut themselves which is false, not everyone who considers themselves emo actually self–harm and another person who may hurt themselves don't consider themselves emos.
An emo is iconically known as follows:
* Pale skin.
* Black hair. or a dark shade of brown.
* Iconic makeup with eyeliner.
* Piercings.
* Black clothing with rarely any color. Most emos often wear green, pink and white.
* Iconic converse, leather boots or vans.
* Choppy and spiked in layers haircut.
* Choppy bangs/fringes on one side of their face or completely covering one eye.
Emos are exactly as above however not all whom dresses as such call themselves emo, but it's a to differ Emo from Scenes and Goths, one being Goths wear maibly black with little to no color, and opposite- Scenes wear more color.
