The word nāḥam appears in the Bible in Isaiah 49:13, Exodus 13:17, Judges 21:15, Jeremiah 31:15, and Genesis 37:35.

Nahum was a Hebrew prophet who came from the town of Alqosh. His name comes from the same root as the Hebrew verb meaning "to comfort". He was known as "the Elkoshite" and was the seventh minor prophet.
