Anything flammable chemical with a boiling point of 54.14°F 12.3°C or higher, or any non flammable chemical is a bastard gas. If it's a liquid at standard room temperature (68°F-77°F, 20°C-25°C) and pressure (1 atmosphere), it's definitely a bastard gas. Some "Bastard gases" make great solvents in the laboratory for extraction or chemical reactions.
Pentane is a bastard gas. It's boiling point of 96.98°F (36.1°C) makes it a liquid at room temperature and useless for gas grilling and refilling butane lighters.
