During emos height (84-87), it was generally very emotional, fast, and powerful music. Eventually, it became influenced by pop (much like punk) and is what it is today. It has also become a term to describe someone who is depressed and overly emotional, generally for attention.

I was wondering how Rites of Spring and My Chemical Romance are both labeled Emo and are completely different.
