Epistemological Infinitism

The view that justification for knowledge never comes to an end—there are always further reasons, deeper grounds, more fundamental principles. You know something because of a reason, but what justifies that reason? Another reason. And so on, infinitely. Infinitism rejects the search for foundations (foundationalism) and the circularity of coherentism, embracing instead the infinite regress as the actual structure of knowledge. We don't need a stopping point—we need an infinite chain of reasons, and that's okay because we can always ask "why?" again and get a better answer.

"You keep asking 'how do you know?' and I keep answering, and you keep asking again. Epistemological Infinitism says: good! That's not a problem—that's the structure of knowledge. We don't need a final answer; we need an infinite chain of increasingly interesting justifications. Keep asking forever."

initial infertility

A somewhat clinical-sounding, sometimes euphemistic phrase for the period early in a marriage when a couple has been trying to conceive but hasn’t yet succeeded. Used to describe the initial phase of unexplained or expected difficulty getting pregnant—captures both the medical/diagnostic aspect and the emotional waiting-room vibe. Can be used seriously, sympathetically, or darkly jokey depending on context.

We hit our first anniversary and were still TTC — calling it "initial infertility" made the whole thing feel less permanent and more like a phase.

secondary infertility

When a person or couple has previously conceived (and may have one or more children) but later struggles to conceive again. Unlike primary infertility, this term highlights the frustration of wanting another child after already having had one — brings its own mix of grief, confusion, and social awkwardness (people assume you’ll have more kids easily). Can be medical, age-related, or unexplained; conversations around it often include guilt, pressure, and privacy boundaries.

They were surprised when month after month produced nothing — after their first baby, dealing with secondary infertility felt even harder because everyone expected round two to be easy.

Cognitive Infralogic

A specialized area of study at the intersection of cognitive science and infralogic, examining how human cognition navigates the infinite combinatorial structures and recursive layers that infralogic reveals. Cognitive infralogic asks: How do actual human minds handle the infinite regress of meta-logical debate? It's the study of how finite human minds cope with the infinite combinatorial possibilities that logic makes available.

The branch of infrascience that examines the infrastructure underlying the human sciences—history, philosophy, literature, arts, and humanities disciplines. Human infrasciences investigate the foundational systems, structures, and conditions that make humanistic inquiry possible: archival infrastructure (libraries, museums, databases) that preserves human records; interpretive infrastructure (languages, concepts, theories) that enables understanding; institutional infrastructure (universities, humanities centers, scholarly societies) that supports humanistic work; technological infrastructure (digitization, text analysis tools, preservation technologies) that extends humanistic capabilities; and social infrastructure (communities of interpretation, peer networks, public engagement) that creates the contexts within which humanistic knowledge is produced and shared.
