It examines why certain cultures value deductive reasoning over inductive, why academic departments feud over methodological approaches (qualitative vs. quantitative), and why some online communities have completely different standards for what counts as a "valid argument." It's the field that asks: if logic is universal, why do two reasonable people looking at the same facts so often reach completely different, yet internally logical, conclusions? The answer, usually, is tribalism.

The specific analysis of group behavior within communities that are defined by their commitment to particular logical frameworks. It explores the social dynamics of debate clubs (why is there always one person who just wants to argue about the rules of debate?), the hierarchy of philosophy departments (logical positivists look down on everyone), and the peculiar rituals of online rationalist communities (where "steelmanning" someone's argument can become a competitive sport). Metalogical sociology reveals that even among people dedicated to pure reason, social status is determined by who can be the most reasonably annoying.

Metalogical Philosophy

The branch of thought that questions the very foundations of logic itself, asking: why should we be logical? Is logic discovered or invented? And if logic is just a human construct, why does it seem to work so well, most of the time, except when it doesn't? Metalogical philosophy is where you go when you've realized that all arguments eventually bottom out in unprovable axioms, and that the only response to "prove that logic is valid" is to use logic, which is circular. It's the philosophy that leads to either a deep appreciation for the mystery of existence or a strong desire to take a nap.

Example: "After a long discussion about the nature of truth, he reached a state of pure metalogical philosophy. 'If all logical systems are based on assumptions that cannot be proven within the system,' he said, 'then the only logical conclusion is that logic is, at its core, an act of faith.' Metalogic

The study of logic itself—the principles, systems, and assumptions that underlie logical reasoning. Metalogic doesn't use logic to argue about the world; it uses logic to argue about logic. It asks: What makes a logical system consistent? Complete? Decidable? What are the limits of formal systems? (Gödel's incompleteness theorems are metalogical results.) How do different logical systems relate? Metalogic is logic turned reflexive, examining its own foundations, its own tools, its own boundaries. It's the discipline that prevents logic from becoming dogmatic by forcing it to confront its own contingency.

"You're so confident in classical logic. But metalogic asks: is classical logic consistent? Complete? Decidable? Gödel showed that any sufficiently powerful system can't be both consistent and complete. Metalogic doesn't destroy logic—it shows logic what it can and can't do. Without metalogic, logic is just prejudice with notation."

Metalogical Literacy

The ability to understand and evaluate logical systems themselves—their axioms, rules, semantics, and limits. It includes familiarity with concepts like completeness, consistency, decidability, and the differences between classical, intuitionistic, paraconsistent, and modal logics. Metalogical literacy allows one to choose appropriate logical tools for different problems and to avoid treating one logic as “the” logic.

Cognitive Metalogic

An area of metalogic and a subfield within infralogic that studies how human beings—individually and collectively—cognitively process, deploy, and respond to logical structures. Cognitive metalogic asks not just what logic is, but how actual human minds do logic: how we perceive logical relationships, how we generate inferences, how we recognize (or fail to recognize) fallacies, and how social contexts shape our logical judgments. It examines the gap between ideal logic (what perfectly rational agents would do) and real logic (what actual humans actually do), exploring how cognitive biases, social pressures, and psychological factors inflect logical practice. Cognitive metalogic is the psychology of logic—the study of logic as a lived human activity rather than an abstract formal system.

Example: "He couldn't understand why his perfectly valid syllogism convinced no one. Cognitive metalogic explains why: humans don't process logic in isolation—they process it through trust, emotion, and social identity, and his argument failed at all those levels."
