When the Hawaiian's saw the Whites (I'm Hapa Haole - mixed Asian + White) they thought they were ghosts or some odd being. The Whites didn't greet in the close up manner that the Hawaiian's did, wore big clunky clothes, and well were White. So it means ghost person, foreigner, or White. HOW it's used determines weather it's nasty or just fact.

Haole is a native Hawaiian term used to describe white people. When you have a tan and it's starting to peel, showing "white spots" giving the look of the dark skin "rotting". This is commenting on the fact that white people don't have naturally "tanned" skin.
