emo

The word Emo refers to either:

1. The Emo (Or Emotive Hardcore) Modern Music Genre, a subdivision of Hardcore Punk.
2. The Emo (Or Emotive Hardcore) movement: a subculture of western, middle to upper-class young people.

Note: Not to be confused with Goth

The Term Emotive Hardcore began with the band Rites of Spring in 1985 who took a more personal approach to punk. Their songs were about personal problems and negativities they experienced in life and the term 'Emo' was coined as an insult to describe the followers of the band.

Modern Emo bands are difficult to pick because whether or not a band is emo is very subjective. Many people consider Pop-Punk bands such as Good Charlotte and Taking Back Sunday as Emo, others do not. Bands most widely excepted as emo include Dashboard Confessional, My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco and Lost Prophets, though even these arguably fall under the genre. Emo music is often avoided by non-emos simply because it is emo, but not always. Just because someone listens to an emo band, does not mean they are emo.

The Emo subculture is a group comprising practicaly entirely of teenagers from a middle to upper-class society. Emos are generally people from well-off homes who consider themselves depressed and distraught. They disapprove with modern ways of thinking and seek not to conform to Pop-Culture. They dress usually in black and thier hair is almost always straight and dark, often covering part of the face. Emo's often have modified sexual preferences and are open to sexual experimentation whereby they consider themselves homosexual and bisexual however considering the young age of many such emos, the actual accuracy of their sexual status is often arguable as many believe such people are still growing and thus have not been able to make a proper decision as yet.

There are two types of Emo's
1: Try-hard Emo's: As named by true Emo's (see below), try-hard emos are people who believe themselves to be emo. They dress like emos and openly advertise thier self-proclaimed Emo status. These types of emos are unlikely to have been through any sort of emotional turmoil and simply dress as they do for social reasons in most cases.

2: True Emo's: Often an evolution of a try-hard emo, but not always, a true emo is a person who genuinly considers themselves depressed. True emo's will never call themselves emo but may use terms such as Scene Kid to describe each other and will often openly advertise their depression. The transition between the two types of emo is often the result of a relationship break-up whereby the emo considers themselves wrongly done by and depressed as a result.
Sadly, true emos will often hurt themselves either in self-pity or as a public display of thier depression. This stereotypically involves slitting of the wrists whereby an emo attempts sucide (though purposly does not follow through) but can often incude other forms of self-destruction. Emos rarely sucide without an outside force such as drugs or alcohol having an effect on them

The parody from the emo subculture is obvious and along with their somewhat anti-social behaviour almost always leads to their outcast from other social groups (which in turn they may consider to add to their depression).

The Emo Parody:
1. Emos disagree with modern pop-culture and wish to separate themselves from modern society – they seek to be individual, but in doing so they actually simply group themselves into another culture, and a negative one at that. They fail to be individual at all and instead are just another group of people.
2. Emos believe themselves depressed, though clinically almost all emos are perfectly healthy mentally and their self-proclaimed depression is an insult to truly depressed people. Emos are well off people who draw attention to themselves by, and perhaps even gain pleasure in, attempting to lead others to believe they are depressed by past experiences. They truth of the matter is, everyone experiences the issues they face, and many people to a greater and much more damaging degree. Emos are depressed about nothing and if they spent half the time they spend wallowing in self-pity as they did happy and fulfilled, the world and their world would be a considerably better place.
Non-Emo: Those Fucking Emo kids are such a pack of cunts.

Try-Hard Emo: I am so depressed man. Nobody gets me. I wish i wasn't an emo.

True-Emo 1: Nobody gets me man. I am so depressed.
True Emo 2: Man, you cut your wrists. Why?
True Emo 1: The world just doesn't get me *sob*

Emo

Emo is ONLY an insult given by Punks, directed towards the avid fans of Emotive Hardcore Punk & the genre itself. Emotive Hardcore Punk started in the mid/early 80's; with Hardcore Punk bands that added more emotional lyrics to their songs. Since they did this, they were no longer considered Hardcore Punk.

Emotive is essentially watered down Hardcore Punk. That being said; Emotive is still Punk. It's still a sub-genre of Hardcore Punk. They still follow the same DIY ethics as Punks, & still have the same mindset.

The most noted bands to take this form of Hardcore Punk in a new direction was; Embrace & Rites Of Spring. Ian MacKaye the lead singer of Embrace; famous for the Hardcore Punk band Minor Threat, the creation of the subculture Straight Edge, & Dischord Records. Guy Picciotto the lead singer of Rites Of Spring; famous for the Emotive band Fugazi & creator of Emotive itself. (Arguably) Started the genre in the mid '80's.

Emotive in the 80's resembled it's parent genre. In the '90's it took a different feel.

Cap'n Jazz & a few other bands took a more Indie feel to their music. Cap'n Jazz with their only album Shmap'n Shmazz; took Emotive from a from a deeply underground Punk sub-genre, to a more widely accepted subset of indie rock. Which is why Emo is widely known, & respected in the Indie subculture.

Skramz (screamo), a sub-genre of Emotive; was Emotive with a more chaotic playing style. The name of the genre is a misnomer. Though the genre often had screaming vocals, it wasn't the focus of the genre. Skramz was just a way of playing more chaotic music, as most Punk was. Skramz started in the early '90's & lives to this day.

Emotive, along with Skramz, were underground genres. With underground labels. They're not widely known, or heard. You won't hear them on the radio, or find them in your local commercialized record store. This is the backbone of all Punk music, & it's sub-genres.

Common misconceptions of Emo; Emo is a style, Emo means Emotional, Emo is depressed, or people who self-mutilate themselves. All these are false! The media has bastardized the genre. In 2003 an article called The Dashboard Confessional Emo. Since this happened, other alike bands have been given the same assumption. You're practically pawns of the media for believing them. It is now widely believed that this style, which is actually FashionXcore a fashion stole from Visual Kei; closely related to J-Rock, which has been played upon by corporations like Hot Topic. They only plan on making money, & don't care what they ruin, or put in it's place.

I've heard recently that Emo died in the '90's. This is also false. Fugazi, a monumental Emotive band that both Ian MacKaye, & Guy Picciotto were both in; were touring & creating records till '01, with their 6th LP. Emotive will still live on with Skramz. In no way is Emotive dead. As long as people still listen to the genre, there will be Emo.

You're not emo unless you either listen to Emotive Hardcore Punk, or you're in an Emotive band. Simple!

I will leave this with some Emotive, Skramz, & some Indie/emo bands: Evergreen, I Hate Myself, Joan Of Arc, Joshua Fit For Battle, Mass Movement Of The Moth, Violent Breakfast, Suis La Lune, Circle Takes The Square, Saetia, Raein, Get Fucked, American Football, Jeromes Dream, Yaphet Kotto, Neil Perry, Amber Inn, Funeral Diner, Harriet The Spy, Cowboys Are Indians, City Of Caterpillar, etc etc...
A: Ready for that emo concert tonight?

Emo is just another stupid stereotype. Emo does not mean you listen to MCR and Fall Out Boy all the time. Emo does not mean you cut yourself. Emo is just another label.

Apparently, it has become cool to be uncool. So many people out there have labeled themselves emo, even though so many others call emos "fags". The vast majority of people that label themselves are just poseurs.

Both boys and girls that are eventually going to be labeled emo usually have:
-tight jeans
-hair that covers at least one eye
-a playlist containing either bands that others have labeled emo, or bands that few have ever heard of
-tight tee shirts, probably a band shirt
-eyeliner
-Converse or Vans

In my world, these kinds of things are perfectly normal, even the tight jeans and eyeliner on guys. But some people choose to label these people emo.

Emo does not actually mean anything. Emo is actually just another stupid label given to people that don't fit someone else's version of normal.

OK, rant over.
Tight jeans and eyeliner on a guy doesn't make that guy emo. Labeling that guy emo makes him emo.

Emo

Probably the most stupid and soft form of punk. (NOTE that other punk genres kick ass ).
Songs are usually themed with depression, teen angst and suicide. Also emo music has developed its own form of fashion : Scene. Scene or Emo kids always cry around for how about their lives suck and how nobody understands them.
Another also annoying and totally wrong thing about emo is that they think are brutal or hardcore.
1. There is nothing brutal in emo songs. Songs structures are with crappy guitars, almost unnoticable drumming, and singing that really sounds like crying.
2. There is nothing hardcore about emo. HARDCORE is a type of punk, and is fast, agressive and totally kickass. And emo has none of that. The emo songs are depressive and slow.
Emo is not brutal. If you want brutal, go listen to some good death metal.
OMFG ! My life sucks, I'll go cry and slit my skinny wrists !
