Loona commenced their pre-debut project in August 2016, with each member releasing a promotional single over the next eighteen months.1 The group has formed three sub-units: Loona 1/3, Loona Odd Eye Circle and Loona yyxy. Their debut EP as a full ensemble, + + (2018), was supported by the lead single "Hi High".
Loona's English name is derived from the Hangul letters ㅇㄷㅇㅅㄴ, each an initial consonant in the syllabic blocks that make 이달의 소녀 (Idarui Sonyeo). When rearranged to ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ, it resembles LOONA in the Latin alphabet.

After the first 5 members Heejin, Hyunjin, Haseul, Yeojin, and Vivi, the first LOOΠΔ sub-unit, LOOΠΔ 1/3, was formed. Yeojin, being only 14 at the time, did not participate in sub-unit activities. Odd Eye Circle of Kim Lip, Jinsoul, and Choerry followed, and then yyxy with Yves, Chuu, Go Won, and Olivia Hye. They then released a pre-debut single favOriTe, before debuting with 'Hi High', in which I want to literally kill the arrangers because WTF HASEUL IS LIKE THE 2ND BEST VOCALIST IN THE GROUP AND SHE COULD BE A MAIN VOCALIST IF THEY HAD SET POSITIONS AND YOU GIVE HER 0.7 SECONDS WTFFFFFFFFFFF.
