It was an American manufacturer of locomotives, primarily known for producing steam locomotives, Founded in 1901, ALCO was one of the major locomotive builders in the United States and became a key player in the railroad industry. The company’s products were widely used in North America and abroad, and it was known for its innovative designs. Their biggest rival was General Motors owned Electro-Motive Division or (EMD). ALCO’s operations included manufacturing various types of locomotives for both freight and passenger services, ALCO struggled to adapt to the growing demand for diesel locomotives as steam engines fell out of favor in the mid-20th century. Eventually it was defunct in 1969.
