They sell drugs, guns, treat women like a sexual aid rather than a real person, kill people, and try to worm their way into the private business sector as much as possible. Why you would look up to someone who kills people for his own benefit as cool and a role modle, I have no fucking idea. Not to be confused with a gangsta, which is basically a teenaged loser who thinks that smoking pot or bringing his switch blade in to show all his loser friends will somehow make him as horrible a monster as, say, a Colombian drug lord.

Allot of definitions have been made about gangster: most of them slaying 'wannabes'.
In short a gangster is a member of a group of people. The gangs and it's gangsters does not have to necessarily be associated with crime although most gangs are.
There are different type of gangsters and all gangsters start their lives as gangsters in similar ways.
Everybody normally associates two types of gangsters as the only type: The wannabes and the real gangsters but there are more types and each of them may be a level up to the next.
Types of gangsters:
INNOCENT CLUB GANGS:
These people are gangster such as 'the chess club gang' Innocent gatherings to do things together and may use the word gang to add a twist such as 'Over 60's garden party gang!'. Just for laughs really. No harm and most don't even consider them as gangsters because of their non violent properties.
SCHOOL YARD GANGSTERS:
These really are the wannabes. Usually rich kids who hang around on streets in poor areas trying to 'represent' these areas when in reality they are not even from these areas and are mummy's boys and also usually filthy rich. These sad peoples started off by copying what they saw in music videos, films and other real gangsters. They are normally in their teens and often sad enough to go up to their 30's! They are attention seekers that often engage in petty crimes to show off, victimise innocent people such as the elderly or disadvantaged and suck up to other gangsters in a the chain of gangsterdome. An easy way to access if a person is a SYG you look for the following traits: Blazing music through Mobile/cell phones or other items. Music is usually only hardcore rap or grime. Normally excessively use slang. Normally lie allot and exaggerate events. Normally are the quickest snitches. Normally never have a one and one fight. Normally fight fifty against one. Mostly cry when get slapped.
These guys really are the wannabes and are the most common.

These guys are the gangs of a few that need quick money or a 'quick raise' as they call it to fund their drug addictions. Normally non violent and steal small things sufficient to fund their drug or alcohol addictions.
HOOLIGANS:
Just crazy hooligans that cause riots at sports events.
The former groups were not what most would call 'REAL' gangsters. the following are.
POVERTY POSSESSED GANGSTERS:
These guys are normally immigrants of countries such as Africa, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Latin America, South Asia, the Middle East and most other parts of the world.
They are sometimes very rarely natives of a country.
Either really intelligent and do not care or either really dumb because they never cared.
These gangsters usually actually live in the ghettos and have never moved out of their 2 bedroom project/council house shared by the 8 in the family. They are the lowest class in society and are almost definitely hand to mouth. Allot of them are orphans of some sort or deprived of love and car/parenting and are victims of abuse of some sort. They really are the guys that get it rough and should be sympathised with. Most people outside of their situations can not understand their difficulties which the mostly hide think them as 'wasters'.
They usually start of as gangsters in order to get money which they desperately need and this makes them progress as gangsters. From suffering most of them are violent so get involved in a allot of fighting and usually are very talented but do not see it or would rather live for the day. Normally fearless as they have not much to loose they do anything from stealing, selling drugs, kidnapping & extorting, mugging, even killing (and being on the run although showing no remorse) and much more to get their hands on money and respect.
Everyday they usually go through a cycle which seems an endless struggle to leave the hood. These are the guys you can really say spike crime rates in cities and cause allot of problems for the police due to their violent attitudes and beliefs that they it is okay to carry guns and knives for 'protection'.
They are REAL Niggas, Pakis, Sand Niggers and whatever else they like to call themselves. They do not have many interests and are very hard to get to open up about their suffering and emotions. They are also very obsessive about territorial protection. They are often the ones to bully the former for fun and are heavily influenced by the hip hop or punk/rock community.
SUPPLIERS:
These guys are pretty simple in what they do, they supply weapons and drugs to the former at price in order to make money to lead luxury lives. Most of them having been the former see themselves as the ones that managed to leave the hood but always seem to go back for more. Most start of as poverty possessed gangsters and have moved up to become part of such gangs. These guys are extremely organised and lead most of their lives like this.
