The latter definition is that applied in the song "Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash.

paint the line

In Ping-Pong, when a player hits the ball directly down the white line of the table over the net - in essence 'painting' the white line with the white ball by following its path exactly.
In his last words Tycho told Gabe to "paint the line" when facing the Soviet twins in a game of Ping-Pong, the outcome of which would determine the fate of the world.

draw the line

to point out a borderline when the actions of one stop being fun and become hard to stand, irritating, etc.
At first I thought her laughter was sweet, but hearing it for nearly half an hour, that's where I draw the line.

I could stand her not reaching orgasm but when she screamed the name of my friend in bed, that's where I draw the line.

Hold the Line

1) A temporary state of being that recommends that the appropriate position is to remain steady and not react whatsoever.

2) A phrase to be utilized when you have something else on your mind and you're not paying attention when someone asks you a question and/or is talking about their own issues.

3) A nonsensical euphemism to belt out whenever one feels the need to just be agreeable.
I called my good buddy in a panic and needed some help. He was drinking and told me to "Hold the Line"

A guy pulled in on his Vespa, took off his helmet and simply said "Hold the Line"

Guy 1: I think I'm gonna call her. I know it's only been just one day, but I think I'm gonna call her.

Guy 2: Buddy, Hold the line
