A Lithuanian last name possessed by only 1 extended family in America. The story goes that a young Lithuanian man was being recruited into the Russian Army and was going to be forced to march from Lithuania to Siberia, a journey he was not looking forward to. His family raised money for a boat ticket to America for him. When he arrived at Ellis Island he was either illiterate or purposefully hiding his identity or simply the clerk misheard the spelling. Either way, he ended up in America with the last name, Sarmuksnis. In America he fell in love with a Lithuanian woman. Her story is equally as interesting. A woman with her same exact name has a boat ticket to America. That woman fell ill with small pox and would not be allowed on the boat. To make use of the ticket, the family gave it to my great grandmother. Her story is as the boat sailed away, she glanced back at the shore and knew that would be the very last time in her life she would see her mother. The Sarmuksnis family is now comprised of 13 people. Their main characteristics of the Sarmuksnis family are great physical strength, good looking, with extremely strong will power
