In experimental research, external variables are everything the researcher didn't design, didn't control, and often didn't consider. They include weather, politics, economic conditions, cultural events, personal histories—the entire buzzing chaos of reality that can't be confined in a laboratory. Good research designs attempt to control for external variables through randomization, blinding, or statistical adjustment, but they can never eliminate them entirely. External variables are why causation is so difficult to establish: the thing you think is causing your effect might just be correlated with some external factor you never noticed.
