It's not just a hole. It's a rabbit hole, akin to the one Alice fell down to Wonderland.

I enjoy falling down Wikipedia rabbit holes because I never know where I may end up.

Extending the metaphor of "surfing" the internet, a Wikipedia rip current is the phenomenon of browsing Wikipedia and getting side tracked for hours by clicking related links.

I got stuck in a Wikipedia rip current, I started reading about the civil war then three hours later I found myself reading about butterflies.
