A person who can be a real dick somtiemes, but will always (mostly) help you. Someone you can relay on, and relate to.

Some can be so good friends they turn into BFF(s).
Friends can also refer to pets.

Teacher: You have eight apples, and you divide them evenly between you, and your friend.
