Buffer year

A buffer year is the period of time (1-2 years) following graduation in which a young person resides with their parents rent-free to save money.

I am currently living at home as part of my buffer year.

first year

First years is the collective term given to first year secondary school students, typically in Ireland. Usually aged 11/12, they are seen as innocent and naive compared to their fifth or sixth year schoolmates, and are at the bottom of the school food chain.

Older Student: Jesus look at all the first years, the size of that one's bag. He's as green as grass! He won't last ten minutes in Ms. Smyth's class.

Larry: "A year virgin?"

It's our year!

Phrase used by every sports fans just to hype up a team and claim they will win it all. They usually say it every year.

Me: "I'm telling you, this is actually the Saints year! We're gonna win the Super Bowl! It's Our Year!"

Everybody Else: "Didn't you say that last year?"

Me: "Yeah well, I was just kidding! I'm being for real now though!"

Everybody else: "Man you ain't winning shit!"

Election year

A year before a presidential election in which no one can get along, everyone is divided, cancel culture is rampant, and it seems endless until the day after the winner is announced and we go back to being normal for 3 years until the next election year.
