The act of doing anything online, be it giving money, buying a certain thing you don't actually need, sending in pictures of yourself doing something stupid, JUST to be assigned a JPEG badge that gets assigned to your account that serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever other than unimpressive bragging-rights

Get the breast cancer badgemug. The Nintendo Badge Arcade was a Free-To-Play downloadable application for the 3DS. It's main purpose was to m̶a̶k̶e̶ ̶m̶o̶n̶e̶y̶ allow users to collect usable badges that they could put on their home screen. The game had around 9K badges, which is pretty cool, if it wasn't only available for 7 or so years (You had to pay money or else you could only use 2 machines per day, 4 if you're really lucky.). The badges were little PNGs of Nintendo's cash cows. (Mario, Pokemon, Animal Crossing ETC.). Some of them weren't useless and could be used as shortcuts to system applications like f̶a̶c̶i̶a̶l̶ ̶a̶t̶t̶a̶c̶k̶ Face Raiders or H̶u̶m̶a̶n̶ ̶O̶C̶ ̶C̶r̶e̶a̶t̶o̶r̶ Mii Maker.
I almost forgot that you could upload your badge/themes to Miiverse, and it could get curated by Nintendo, so thousands could see it.
