Emo began as a music style in the '90's, and has become associated with bands like My Chemical Romance, Fallout Boy etc. It became a style that mostly (NOT ALWAYS) focuses on the vintage-look (retro brand names etc). Being emo myself, you're all gonna think 'OMG IT'S AN EMO, SHE'S, LIKE, GONNA BE, LIKE, OMGWTFBBQ MY LIFE SUCKS EMO'S RULE THEY'RE SO HARDCORE OMG LMAO' or something like that. (I'm not taking the mick out of anyone, I swear. Sorry if I offended someone.) I'm not depressed all the time, I'm not always writing dark poems about life, and I'm not anorexically skinny (I laugh about that).
Why is emo associated with self-harm? Just because some people decided that any depressing self-destruction music MUST be emo?
Emos are usually, as far as I know, into the retro emo bands that began the emo craze, and the more modern bands like Panic! @ The Disco etc. The most common feature of emo is the hair with a side-parting. The bangs are NOT always covering one eye, NOT always dark, NOT always straight, NOT always shaggy for boys and NOT always short for girls.
The thing I've noticed that made me laugh about people's descriptions for emo boys was that they all wear trousers fitted for girls. WHAT A CROCK. I've never seen an emo boy dressed in trousers that are fit for girls. It would look a bit dumb, I mean, with the hips and all. So what if the trousers might be tight? It doesn't mean they're for girls! SERIOUSLY STRANGE. But if there is an emo boy who wears girls trousers, SORRY.
Another big thing for emo is the gloves/bracelettes and scraves. NOT everyone wears them but it's pretty common, from what I've seen.

Get the emomug. an emo isnt someone who sits in the corner and slits there wrist whilst sitting in a dark room alone. it is some one who doesnt jump for joy when the colour pink is mentioned and prefers to wear black. they are emotional because of all the crap that all the other people put us through. we dont slit our wrists but if we do then we have a good reason. take a look at the world and then try telling us its not shit. were not all suicidal, we just dont get the point of life if were just going to end up dead. all your lifes accomplishments will be piontless. stop pissing off us emos because at one time or another you will feel the same way as us.

The word is derived from its NSA acronym EMO (Ebony Migration Obliterator). It was designed to possess everything black people hate: irritating vocals, whiny lyrics, subdued dress style, and a complete undancability. Black people react to this music as if they were hearing nails on a chalk board and it is greatly responsible for the racial divide in suburbs today.

Emo followers complain about how their parents make them grow up in an upper middle class enviornment. To be emo you must listen to emotional garbage pop artists such as Taking Back Sunday, The Killers, and other lame bands of that sort. An emo person will also have a myspace page set as private so they can feel like they are depriving someone from being their friend by their choice. Emo people always have extremly tight clothing mainly in the color black. They have 1/3 of their face covered by their greasy flat hair. This is believed to cover their eye so nobody can see into their tortured soul or some b.s.
An example of an emo is that loner who sits in the corner with his group of homosexual looking goths. Emo and goth are completely seperate catagories and are not to be confused with one another. Goths usually have some substance to their being and do not want approval from others. Where emo's want to act like goths but will never get the slitest amount of respect from anyone.

They listen to depressing music to make themselves feel better about their depressing lives. They also think they have all the problems in the world when they are actually boffins who scrounge off of mummy and daddy and live in a big mansion. But for attention they think it's cool to slit their wrists and then go and broadcast it. They wear tight black jeans, converses, scarfs (even when it's hot), thick rimmed geeky glasses, and all look like clones of eachother. When they are not self harming they skip around town pissing everyone off with their high pitching yelling. They like to go to crappy gigs and chat about how shit their lives are. They hate everyone apart from eachother.
