Debate Sophism

A specific form of Argumentative Sophism focused on formal debate tactics—using debate rules, formats, and expectations to gain advantage rather than find truth. Debate Sophism treats every exchange as a contest to be won, using rhetorical tricks, strategic ambiguity, and procedural objections to dominate opponents. The sophist knows debate's rules and exploits them, turning what could be dialogue into performance.
"He objected to the format, then to the timing, then to the moderator. When the debate finally started, he spent his time questioning premises, not addressing arguments. Debate Sophism: using debate's procedures to avoid debate's purpose. The game was the point; truth was irrelevant."

Truth Sophism

The use of "truth" as a rhetorical weapon—invoking truth to end discussion, dismiss opponents, or claim authority without justification. Truth Sophism treats "truth" as a possession, not a goal: "I have the truth" means "you have nothing to say." The sophist doesn't demonstrate truth; they assert it, using the word's power to silence. It's sophistry about truth: using the concept to avoid the work of finding it.
"I'm just interested in the truth, unlike you." Truth Sophism: using truth as a cudgel, not a compass. The claim to truth became a way to dismiss, not a way to inquire. Truth wasn't sought; it was asserted—and anyone who disagreed was against truth itself."

Reality Sophism

The use of "reality" as a rhetorical weapon—invoking reality to dismiss alternative perspectives, experiences, or frameworks. Reality Sophism treats one's own interpretation of reality as Reality Itself: "face reality" means "agree with me." The sophist doesn't engage other views; they declare them unreal. It's sophistry with ontology: using reality to police what can be said, thought, or believed.
"Your experience doesn't match reality. Reality Sophism: using 'reality' to dismiss experience. The speaker didn't engage what she felt; they just declared it unreal. Reality became a weapon, not a shared world. The sophistry is in the certainty: my reality is real; yours is not."

Source Sophism

The use of source requirements in bad faith—demanding sources in ways designed to be impossible to satisfy, or dismissing every source provided with shifting criteria. Source Sophism begins with "source?" and then moves through endless objections: biased source, outdated source, not authoritative enough, not primary enough, not the right kind of source. The goal is not to evaluate sources but to exhaust the person providing them. It's sophistry with citations: using the appearance of rigor to avoid engagement.
"She provided a source. 'That's biased.' Another. 'Too old.' Another. 'Not peer-reviewed.' Another. 'Predatory journal.' Source Sophism: source as infinite regress, citation as exhaustion. No source would ever be good enough because good enough wasn't the point."

Anti-Pseudoscience Sophism

The use of "pseudoscience" as a blanket dismissal for any claim that challenges orthodox science, regardless of evidence or reasoning. Anti-Pseudoscience Sophism turns the legitimate concern about pseudoscience into a rhetorical weapon: "that's pseudoscience" ends inquiry, dismisses evidence, silences dissent. It's sophistry in skeptic's clothing: using the fight against pseudoscience to avoid engaging with challenging ideas, protecting scientific orthodoxy from legitimate critique.
"He presented evidence that challenged the paradigm. 'Pseudoscience!' they declared—and that was it. No engagement, no counter-evidence, no discussion. Anti-Pseudoscience Sophism: using the label as a conversation-ender, not a conversation-starter. The fight against pseudoscience became a shield for dogma."
