To steal something, take something that doesn't belong to you, probably in a wholesale/ongoing and devious manner. Visualize a rat crossed with a vacuum cleaner.

The intention is to prevent the addresses from being snarfed up by automated web scanners for use by spammers. (GNU Mailman 2.1.8a mailing list software)
