Many tsunderes feel that their love interests are unworthy of them and/or may feel uncomfortable about being vulnerable in general. A tsundere may or may not become sweeter and more vulnerable toward the love interest as their relationship continues, depending on the health of the relationship. Their secret love may or may not be obvious to anyone else, but in fiction it tends to be, whereas in real life it tends not to be.
"Tsundere" is a combination of two Japanese terms: "tsun-tsun“ (to turn away in disgust), and "dere-dere" (to be lovey-dovey). The tsundere is a popular character trope in anime.
