Pronounced: Sam-Bell, Sambell is the name of the mythical creature and global anomaly responsible for the disappearance of socks, typically, half a pair at a time. Sambell is a sub-deamon meaning that although he is a manifestation of negative energy (why he steals), he is rather harmless.
AKA: Sock Thief Ghost, The Sock Bandit, Stocking Stocker, the Sock Monster, Lint Goblin, etc.
Side Note: If you think about it, everyone has lost at least 1 pair of socks. Now lets do some math. If 8 billion people all have lost a pair of socks, shouldn't the streets be filled with nearly 8 billion socks, that's nearly 400,000,000lbs of socks that go missing...wtf?!
