shortball

This phrase comes from cricket terminology. In cricket, a shortball is a fast, rising delivery that causes discomfort to the batsman, and can sometimes result in an injury from being struck by the ball.

In social situations, a short ball can be most loosely defined as anything that causes annoyance, discomfort, or rejection.

Sometimes, when saying "Shortball!', people use an accompanying hand action as if to fend the ball away from their chin, similar to a batsman in cricket. Experienced shortballers sometimes only perform the hand action without saying the word, or just abbreviate the phrase to "Short!"

1: "Hey mate, are you coming to the pub tonight?"
2: "No mate, I have to watch some paint dry at my house"
1: "Shortball there"

1: "Dude, I got locked outside and had to sleep in the snow!"
2: "Shortball there"

1: "So I got back to her place, and she just wanted to watch movies and talk about feelings!"
2: "Shortball"

A girl who, once steps onto the field, is transformed from "daddy’s little girl" to a fierce, unrelenting competitor who will stop at nothing in order to win a game. Characteristically with dirt across her face, ratted, sweaty hair, bloody knees and dirt stained socks and uniform. She's a diligent hard worker who knows the real meaning of teamwork, spirit, and fearing nothing. Contradictorily she personifies all this while she still wears cute, color coordinated hair ribbons and sleeve stripes.

snowball effect

(adj.) descriptive of an entity or situation where something once small and relatively insignificant grows exponentially at a swift pace, engulfing everything in its path. A more dramatic progression than the classic domino effect. The basic workings of a literal snowball effect can be illustrated by taking one's average baseball-sized snowball and dropping it down the side of a snowy hill. As it descends it gathers more snow and whatever leaves, sticks, etc. are in its way. The snowball accumulates not only size, but speed.

When Mortal Combat was first released, there were numerous instances of fans going to largely populated areas, like college campuses and shopping malls, and yelling "MORTAL COMBAT!!!" at the top of their lungs. Others withing earshot who understood this cry would do the same. Depending on just how many in the know heard and participated, created an amazing, echoing snowball effect.
