Mispelled version of the word "punani," the Kanaka Maoli (native Hawaiian) word for the female genatalia. Literal translation is beautiful and/or splendid flower.
The origin is often miscredited as coming from Jamaica. This can be attributed to the word "puntun," later pronounced "poontang," thought to originate in West Africa and making it's way to the West Indies.
