Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous is fellowship of men and women for whom drugs (and, yes, alcohol IS a drug) had become a major problem. They meet regularly to help each other stay clean. NA uses the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions as originated by AA, but have abridged them to be all-inclusive. Narcotics Anonymous was formed in 1953 by several addicts, the most well-known perhaps, being Jimmy K. The formation of NA was necessary because addicts were not welcomed into AA, and could not stay clean. Narcotics Anonymous has it's own literature, the most important being the Basic Text, and it's own unique language. NA uses "clean," "clean time," and "recovery," rather than sober and sobriety. Narcotics Anonymous has over 50,000 meetings per week worldwide. As stated in the 5th Tradition, every group has but one primary purpose; to carry the message to the addict who still suffers. That message is that an addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use, and find a new way to live.
Any addict can join Narcotics Anonymous regardless of age, race, creed, sexual orientation, religion, or lack of religion. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using.

narcotic

1. (narrow-sense) An opiate, such as heroin, morphine, codeine, etc.

2. (broad-sense) A powerful mind-altering substance, usually illegal (tho not necessarily, see DXM, an over-the-counter narcotic, and hillbilly heroin, Ritalin, Vicodin, etc. which are legally prescribed).
1. Opiates are classic narcotics.

2. <Drug Warrior> Look at all those newfangled narcotics going around! The country's goin' to hell in a handbasket.

Narcotics Anonymous

If you are concidering attending an NA meeting and wonder what it's like, it's probably gonna be not like you expected. Many emphasize the 12 step program NA uses, the sponsor-system and the "higher force" but what makes NA unique is that all of this is voluntary, and the "higher force" is not God or Jesus, but a force within yourself. You don't have to call first, sign a membership or plan anything, you can just show up at the meeting and sit down around a table.

Nobody has to say anything at a meeting, making it an easy starting point for someone who are looking to end their drug problems. What you do is listen, to people who know your drug problem from every aspect because they have experienced it themselves. Some are in a worse place than you are, while others have achieved the things you dream of. Meeting these people in an eviroment where you are equals can be very inspirational and this is why NA often succseed where "the system" fails.
Just get your ass to a meeting and sit down and listen. The shittier you feel walking into narcotics anonymous the better you'll feel coming out. Don't ask me why, but it works.

Narcotic

An opiate, such as heroin, morphine, or opium. It doesn't mean just any super-addictive drug, like meth. Just opioids like codeine.

Too often misused by propagandists and the ignorant as a word to describe any illegal drug that you're not supposed to use. This is probably because of its scary-sounding name, like some sort of hybridization between psychotic and nark, which just sounds awful.

Don't listen to anybody who uses it that way. They have no clue what they're talking about.
Wingnut health teacher: narcotics like marijuana and crack cocaine make your penis fall off. True story.

Me: pot is not a narcotic. You should now this. But you're paid by the government, so I guess I should be more realistic. God forbid you say something an educated doctor would say!!

narcicist

The word "narcicist" refers to someone that loathes him or herself, considering him/herself superior to all including his friends and even his spouse. The word "narcicist" comes from Narcis, a Greek mythological character. Narcis was a vey good looking young man. Many women had fallen in love with him, but he was too proud and vane and he would reject all of them. One of the rejected women was the ninfa Eco. Eco was hurt and locked herself up in her room without food or water. That is how she slowly consumed herself with pain, until she vanished and all that remained was her voice, which repeateded itself against the walls of the room. Thus the word "echo." The goddess Nemesis (the goddess of vengeance) heard Eco's prayers and decided to punish Narcis so he would suffer in the same way as she did. One day Narcis went to drink water from the river. As he stooped down to drink he saw his own face reflected in the water. Nemesis used her powers so that Narcis would fall madly in love with that image. Narcis could not stop looking at himself. He wanted to touch his image and hug it, but he couldn't because it would disappear in the water. He also could not see it since the waves of the river would not let him. He could not go away since the image would disappear. That is how he stayed trying to admire himself until he died of starvation.
A narcicist could be an unloving spouse that does not appreciate family or friends
