A phrase when a girl/guy politely tells you that they don't see you as a romantic partner, but still wants to be friends with you.
If you are angered or feel insulted by this, you really shouldn't be, as it's their personal choice and opinion on who they view as a friend or as a partner and you should just move on as this is one chapter in you life.
Keep your friendship with said person and to not ruin it unless you are one of those "Nice Guy" or "Nice Girl"

Get the god damn hint. She/He doesn't like you back so stop being an asshole wondering if it means anything else. You both will most likely drift apart after these words are said to you, in rare cases, this can work out and you can still be friends.

A comment mainly said by women but can also be used by men. Meaning the person you are wanting to be in a relationship with is not ready and or doesn't like you in that way. Such as;
You: I like you, please will you be my insert partner
Them: oh sorry I think we should just be friend's
Sometimes it can be ment in a mean way so people often misunderstand the use of this phrase. But it will mostly be used as a way for a person to be let down without trying to hurt their feelings. Because if it's sincere then a person likes you but maybe not in the way you interpreted it. So what it means;

You: I have emotion
Them: right now is not a good time
Or
Them: I'm sorry I don't like you in that way
Or
Them: we have clashing personalities so I don't think we would work well being together
Or
Them: I love someone else and am waiting for them
Or
Them: Your my friend I don't want to affect our friendship.

Basically the way someone will break up with you if they are trying put it nicely (see euphemism). The word "just" is the word that hurts. It's like saying, "Let's never go further than being friends. Never." Take out the "just" and it doesn't seem so bad, right?
"Hey Paul, I really like you, let's just be friends." Ehh, this doesn't work.. There has to be a "but" in there.
"Hey Paul, I really like you, but let's just be friends." Perrrfect. That one hurts more than a freight train.

The phrase women use when they want to hear your heart actually break.
Often said after weeks of cock teasing.
For maximum effect, normally said when you think you are just about to get in her knickers but she is just about to walk out and get in a taxi with some better looking, fitter, richer guy, infront of all of you work mates.

"Oh I am sorry. I didn't realise you felt that way. You know we could never be anything more than colleagues. Lets just be friends"
*dull snap*
"oh?"

What a person (usually a women) says to someone who has revealed their romantic interest to them.
A somewhat passive aggressive way of rejecting someone.

Let's just be friends okay? I still want to talk and hang out with you every once and a while - (Keep you around just in case all other options fail) But I'm just not interested in you that way.

Just Friends phrase - I don't just want you to mourn the loss; I want to remind you of it every day. I want you to suffer. I want you to envy. I want you to die slowly, a bit at a time. And I want you to smile and thank me for it.
Girl: Let's just be friends.
Guy: O.k. I'll still hang out with you, I guess. Hopefully, I'll eventually be able to win you over from those assholes and you'll realize that I'm the one for you.
Girl: Nope. I love being treated like shit. Later.
