A thumb ring is often warn as a sign of power. Traditionally it was worn by archers to protect their thumb during rapid firing. Although often misunderstood as a statement of sexuality, the thumb ring symbolizes strength and courage.

Thumb War

On urbandictionary, a thumb war consists giving your own definition a thumbs up and giving a rival's definition a thumbs down on a daily basis while said rival does the same for himself. A thumb war is won when one of the contenders forgets to vote and/or gets a life.

I hope the addition of this definition doesn't provoke a thumb war.

the signature hand gesture used in extemporaneous speaking: where you're talking about foreign policy and make a fist with your thumb on top and hold it up to really emphasize your point.

he's so used to using the extemp thumb in speech and debate that i've seen him use it in class presentations as well!
