On May 10, 2005, in Tbilisi, Georgia (the country, not the American state), a man named Vladimir Arutinian threw a live grenade at W. Due to the handkerchief tied around it, however, it failed to detonate. Alternatively, the rule could have been invoked years earlier by a pretzel.

When talking to someone of the opposite gender over some sort of electronic contraption, such as instant messaging, text messaging, or other alternate forms of communication, the rule states that if said person does not respond to a message in the time of five minutes, that they have either left, or are not paying attention to you. In most cases, this spells doom for relationships, but if your are talking to someone with a short attention span, this may be understandably excused with the necessary punishment of one minute of shunning.

Refers to the practice of letting employees leave work an hour early. The term derives from the military, where supervisors are often not permitted to let their personnel leave early, but ARE permitted to grant their staff breaks, as long as they are less than 1 hour. On special occasions, a supervisor can work around the prohibition on early excusal by giving the staff a 59-minute break at the very end of the day; thus allowing them to leave about an hour early. The "59-Minute Rule" is often put into effect on the Friday before a three-day weekend.
