The physical and mental straining of abilities to complete a task/job in order to be rewarded with a form of intrinsic/extrinsic gratification.

Although unpleasant and painful, work is the meaning of life for all species of living creature. Amongst all the animals of the earth, only the human race has had the privilege of having the option to choose the work they do. Although humans can choose the work they do, no matter how good the work, it can be painful even though it might be the passion of that individual. Despite the nature of work, the most successful individuals in a society are capable of carrying the burden of work and removing useless distractions.

Man #1: Hey man, you down to go to the nightclub tonight after work?
Man #2: No my bad, I got more work to do at home.
Man #1: What do you have to do so late?
Man #2: I have to go study for the midterms, I'm almost done with my degree.
