In the 20th century the word was used in the term mentally retarded, a broad term used to describe people with mental handicaps. Because of this, the word became strongly associated with mental disability. As time passed, people began using the word Retarded to describe people, places or things that they found dumb or unappealing. Later on, the use of the word became considered offensive or taboo by many people, because of it's association with mental disabilities.

Get the Retardismmug. The word “Retard” is used to offend a most likely disabled person. For example: a person that has a learning disability. From personal experience being called a retard is very hurtful to me and it left me thinking I was useless and utterly stupid (which I am but whatever). Just don’t use it unless u can actually use it. It’s a bad slur and yeah for whoever is reading this remember to drink water everyday and have a great day :)
