Melvin

Your typical Herb (H is silent). Someone you know that flushes the toilet after he farts, or showers in a bathing suit. Usually by the first glance you can tell if he/she is a Melvin. Usually will give off a strong odor like that of a squid.

Guy 1: Whats that smell?

Guy 2: Its probably Herbert in the stall. He got ass naked to take a dump.

In the years leading up to 2022, Melvin Capital made bets against key stocks within the USA stock market, after retail investors noticed inconsistencies with the stock, specifically the huge short position that Hedge Funds (including Melvin Capital) had accrued. Retail traders realized that these positions would at some stage need to be bought back so they independently decided to buy up the stock.

Melvin Capital essentially went bankrupt due to some very poor decision making and lack of proper risk management.

The phrase "you did a melvin" was coined in 2022 to indicate that your lost money, or made bad decisions which affected you negatively.

Jeez Kenny - you did a melvin on that trade huh?

An extremely stupid (and somehow not illegal) play on the stock market by an institutional investor which results in billions of dollars of damage to the company who made the play. Typically due to extreme greed such as shorting stock by over %100 in the hopes of buying it back after it drops to zero dollars.
Named for the company holding the short position during the 2021 GME Short Squeeze

GME is a company with no intrinsic value! They'll be bankrupt by the end of 2020! Let's Melvin it! What's the worst that could happen? Only a total retard would try to squeeze us here...
