Rei Ayanmi was created in the Chamber of Gauf by combining the DNA of Shinji Ikari's mother( Yui Ikari) and the second angel Lilith. There are many Ayanamis down in the Chamber of Gauf and they are all empty vessels to which a soul must be transferred to them to make them whole. She unites with Lilith in the End of Evangelion in order to initiate the Third Impact or the Human Instrumentality Project. She has a small amount of genetic makeup from Yui Ikari so therefore is Shinji Ikari's "relative". She ultimately dies during The End of Evangelion because Shinji Ikari rejected her gift of the Third Impact.
