Can’t win for losing

When you voluntarily lose (to make someone feel better, to end an argument), and then the situation gets even worse. So, what you thought you would gain by losing on purpose is lost anyway.

It’s a colloquial equivalent to paving the road to hell with good intentions.

(A lot of people writing their definitions for this are trying to make logic out of the phrasing but weren’t around when this phrase was more popular, leading to incorrect definitions.)
I let my spouse win the argument to calm down the situation, and now I’m getting criticized for not sticking up for myself. I can’t win for losing!

Superpowers can't win wars against eachother

Right. Because of mutually assured destruction... UNLESS... Unless, of course, someone seized control of all the nukes at the same time (somehow)... And then whoever THAT GUY wanted to LOSE the war... Would be UNABLE TO RETALIATE. WOW! BUT I DON'T KNOW GUYS! THAT SOUNDS VAGUELY ANALOGOUS TO SOMETHING I READ ON URBAN DICTIONARY! UNABLE TO RETALIATE!? Well, then THAT GUY could just choose winners and losers completely arbitrarily, right?
Hym "Superpowers can't win wars against eachother... Unless THAT. Unless that thing I just said. Because then it wouldn't be mutual. Is THAT what Emma mean when she brought up MUTUAL? Why did she bring that up? Is it NOT THAT anymore?"

Win Trading

Win Trading is a practice common in games with ranked leaderboards. Essentially, one party agrees to lose in a ranked match, leading to records of 500 wins to 0 losses, and a guaranteed spot on the top of the ladder.
I want the top spot in SSF2THDR, and you want the top spot in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. So I host a ranked match, and leave the match if anyone other than you joins. Then, if you join, we make sure that I eventually lose. Win Trading.

If you touch a horse, you win the divorce!

A common idiom from 18th century Britain, first coined by Sir John Walters in reference to his ex-lover Caroline Milcke. The original phrasing, “place thy hand on a horse, and be victorious in the divorce.” This obscure idiom was adopted by 19th century romantics and its popularity grew exponentially. As of the early 20th century, the phrase was adapted to its current wording by Elizabeth Williams.
