A wallflower: The odd person at a social event/party who stands to the side, fades into the background, as they are too shy to ask someone to dance or no one wants to dance with them; This isn't generally based on the person being appealing in a attractive level.
Though when someone looks through the throng of moving bodies and goes over to this ,presumably, oddity of a person and gets to them they discover they're the most interesting person they have ever met.

Someone who chooses to observe, instead of experience life.
They know a lot about people, what they are truthfully like, how they actually act when they think no one is paying attention.
Since people have little interest in wallflowers, they usually know a lot about people. The good and the bad.
Wallflowers are not mean, or impolite. They are usually pleasant, and respectful- just shy and/or introverted.
Nontheless, people tend to use the word "wallflower" negatively. What a shame.

The shy girl, or guy in high school that blends in- no one really knows them, but they always seem to be there, in the background.
Teacher- "Pass that paper to Jane."
Student- "Who's Jane?"
Teacher- "The girl that's been sitting two seats behind you all year. She's almost in all your classes."
Student thinks to himself- "It's not my fault she's a wallflower."

the planned activity of attending a party or social gathering and blending into the background; wallflowering is a benign activity for shy people or individuals who enjoy listening in on conversations and engaging in harmless people watching; it is NOT stalking
Jason wasn't in much of a talkative mood so he was going to hit his buddy's party, do some wallflowering for about an hour, and then slip away quietly.
