A coomon miscoception is that the word originated from the internet. This word however has been around as long as there have been engineers, or at least as long as there have been electrical apliances.

Idiot: Whaaa?

Engineer: RTFM!!! It's right there in the Box!!!

Idiot: All I see is the manual, where's the RTFM?

Acronym for "Read the Fucking Message of the Day". Used in the game Counter-Strike, in which players can say "motd" to read the message of the day, often containing server rules and other important information.

Player: Hey is cussing allowed on this server?
Admin: RTFMOTD
Player: motd
