To be "M.I.A" means to be "Missing In Action". This refers to when someone disappears without telling anyone and they begin to wonder where they are, but have no idea where.

Friend 1: Have you heard from Jack recently?
Friend 2: No, he's been M.I.A since last Tuesday.
Friend 1: Wait really? No one knows where he is?
