Beggar’s Canyon

A section of Route 21(McCarter Highway) in Newark, NJ, that stretches from the Clay Street bridge southward to the Interstate 78/Route 1&9 interchange. Where, if caught at a red light, you will most likely be asked to put some change in an old, used paper cup.

Named after the treacherous canyon on Tattoine where Luke Skywalker would bullseye womp rats in his T-16, Beggar’s Canyon in Newark is sometimes also treacherous to navigate.

“Better roll up your window Lou, we’re about to head into Beggar’s Canyon.”

“I used to love hanging out in the Ironbound section of Newark, but lately it’s become Beggar’s Canyon.”

A beggar's dozen is one short of a dozen and two shy of a bakers dozen.
The number 11 (eleven).

That jive talking cat short changed me. I asked and asked all week and he finally agreed to give up a dozen of them things but he only gave me eleven. When I asked him about it he said, "Well that right there is a beggar's dozen my boy. Beggars can't be choosers, don't ya know."

To think that within 15 years humans will not only have visited Mars, but possibly even begun the process of colonizing our solar system is just beggar's belief.

Beggar Pirate Economy

An economic system that doesn’t produce any internal wealth generation of its own and instead depends on raiding neighboring regions and asking for outside help. Such an economy usually has a high level of capital flight, leaving most of its residents impoverished. Shortages of basic goods and services tend to be commonplace, if available at all.

They have a Beggar Pirate Economy, it won’t last long as a country.
