A disgracefully shoddy and/or differing-from-the-book play or movie made from one of Lyman Frank's Oz books.

I fail to understand why MGM's abaumination of "The Wizard Or Oz" was so popular, since the movie is so far removed from the book's charming plot, and is so full of negativity, dark scary themes, and violence.
