A person new to a social group, bringing along another unknown individual of lesser status than themselves, for the soul purpose of deflecting social hazing on the lesser individual.

I was going to a party where i didn't know anyone, so i brought my buffer bitch as a precaution.

Awkward buffer

A person who goes along to a social situation to buffer the awkwardness. Used often when you're trying to get to know someone, but certainly not in the "date" sort of way. Works best if the awkward buffer is a friend of both parties.

Bob: I'm going to meet Maria tonight so we can hang out and get to know each other. Could you come with and be an awkward buffer?

Shelly: Sure! I'm good friends with her, I'll help keep the conversation going :)

When someone who knows no one has a party and 'buffer kids' are invited to make the list seem bigger. Buffer kids are the kids normally invited to parties, so it doesn't seem weird if they come.
