Ostensibly they are against the deep state, believe in free speech, and are simply down to earth, regular guys. Ellen Degeneres employed this persona in self-parody in her stand-up 'Relatable' in 2018, joking she fully empties her toothpaste just like us poors do...except she squeezes it out by flattening the tube with a gold bar.
