Rack Focus

A commonly used technique in both film and television to shift focus from a foreground object to a background object by turning the the focal ring on a lens.

Examples of rack focus can be seen in almost any movie or tv show when the focus is shifted from one object--mostly people--to another. It is most often used dramatically.

A "rack" was a slang term for a motor-bike for older Australians. So, to go get "on-yer-bike" and go away upon a command you would be "racking off". To rack off is less rude, but alliterative, for another popular expression.

In the military the rack is your bunk. To rack out or hit the rack is to go to bed for the purpose of sleeping. If you find it difficult to get out of bed through fatigue, laziness, illness, hangover, depression, or any of a number of other reasons, then the "rack Monster" has ahold of you.
