Rule of the thing 

A fun idiom that means "a broadly accurate guide or principle, based on practice rather than theory." It is exactly like "Rule of Thumb" but without the added joke that it's meaning stems from domestic abuse.

The general rule of the thing is to add the ingredients when the water starts to boil
