Supposedly, the original legend was that St. Nicholas was a bishop who lived a few hundred years after Christ. A poor man with three daughters had few other options than to sell them into prostitution (so three hos: ho ho ho!) because that other (and nastier) sex-for-money scam, heterosexual marriage, would require that he pay money he doesn't have for a wedding for each of them. Presumably St. Nick paid for the wedding by anonymously throwing a bag of coins through the window. By the time of the third engagement, the father began to become curious and started watching the window to determine who was paying for all of this - so St. Nick outsmarted him by dropping the last bag of gold through the chimney.
Hence the association of St. Nicholas as patron saint of working girls, as well as of a few less desirable groups such as the pawnbrokers who profit from the poverty of others and the ill-behaved hellions who think they're entitled to free toys just because it's giftmas.
