good for nothing

A phrase that can describe two entirely-opposite ends of the meaning-spectrum, depending on how the words are punctuated.

A "good-for-nothing" is, of course, someone who lacks the knowledge and/or motivation to make himself useful in any way. But on the other hand, someone who zealously toils and struggles his a** off trying to totally "be a saint 24/7" but receives no better treatment as a result of it --- in other words, his fellow humans mistreat him with just as much chilliness and lack of charity as if he were just a "good-for-nothing" --- will feel as if he's been "good for nothing"... he's totally worn himself out trying to be "Honest Abe" and "Sir Galahad", yet nobody acknowledges or appreciates his efforts, and so he's behaved himself exceptionally but received zero reward or praise for his efforts.

Nothing Ass MF

Someone who has nothing to do ever! They can be found sitting on their Grandma's porch or riding on the passenger side of everyone's vehicle. They can never offer any suggestions as to what they need or want to do. They always know about all the gossip but they refuse to get up and do anything productive. They always just talk about doing something but never do.

Mona: "Hey Chris", whats going on?
Cris: nothing!
Mona: What you gonna be up to today?
Cris: nothing!
Mona: What did you do yesterday?
Cris: nothing!
Mona: What you gonna do later?
Cris: nothing!
Mona: O.K then, bye you nothing ass MF.

Considered inept by anyone E-6 or higher, regardless of how demonstrably capable. Used in a derogatory fashion by E-6 and above; used in a amiable fashion by E-5 and below. *The* place to be in the US military.
