PWNed is a misspelling of the word owned. The P is right next to the O key, so that's most likely how it came about. Before it's popularity, I am pretty sure we all used it.

1. to destroy beyond "owned". to completely overpower your opponent as typically used in video games,(but is in no way limited to)
