The two sides consisted of the United States of America (known more commonly as the Union and consisting of fifteen northern states, plus California) and the newly formed Confederate States of America, consisting of eleven southern states who stood for state's rights and slavery. The Union eventually triumphed in 1865 after a long and costly struggle on both sides, and the seceding states were eventually readmitted to the Union. The war has been called the first official modern war, as both sides incorporated telegraph communication, the use of railroads as transportation, the introduction of new military technology such as rifled muskets and ironclad warships and the doctrine of "total war," or war against civilians as well as military personnel. Finally, the war produced such iconic figures in American history as Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant (who later became President), Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, Joshua L. Chamberlain and countless others.
As a side note, many today commonly believe the war was fought over slavery alone. While slavery was eventually used by the Union to justify the war, the issue of state's rights vs. national sovereignty first caused the outbreak of war. There are perhaps thousands of books written on the American Civil War, its cause and its aftermath, so I suggest you read those and get a better understanding of the subject that from what I can tell you.

Why Did the USA invade Vietnam?
After the second world war, The USA and The USSR emerged as the world's two great superpowers. However, the two nation's political systems conflicted and a war of words and threat broke out. This was known as the cold war. America became increasingly fearful of the Soviet Union's communist system spreading across the world, one country at a time. This theory was known as the 'domino theory'. When China went communist in 1949, America felt that the threat of communism was very real. As a result, they entered Korea and were partially successful; The ROK (South Korea) remains a capitalist state today. They then turned their attentions too Vietnam, where a communist group known as the Viet Minh had emerged, founded by Ho Chi Minh. France were already present in Vietnam as it had been a colony of their's prior to WW2. However, even after a vast amount of support given by the USA, the French were eventually driven out by the Viet Minh. America's response to this was to help Ngo Dinh Diem to power in south Vietnam. Diem was a ruthless dictator who was cruel to the peasant population of Vietnam, but he was anti-communist, and so the USA helped him. Before long, a new communist militia group was set up called the Viet Cong, again founded by Ho Chi Minh. America began to send military 'advisers' to combat the Viet Cong. This continued for a few year until eventually, in 1965, The USA was fully at war with communist forces in Vietnam.

The Bongunist Party was instated as a unified emergency war government in Tokeopia, appointing the now-legendary Doob Squad responsible for major combat operations against the pig army. The Doob Squad fought for control over much of both regions, most notably the Ghanja Heritage Base in Tokeopia, and the "Compound" (Area 69) and the "Birdshit" (Birdensheissen) airfield in Stonerland.
The Doob Squad succeeded in annihilating the pig/monster opposition, and after strategic use of the newly-discovered Atom Bong in 2004, the Stoner War resulted in the unification of the involved territories into the Union of Stonerland and Tokeopia.

It is a must read for all fans of the living dead, for all lovers of subtext, and for all people who enjoy a good horror story.
It was loosely adapted into a 2013 movie starring Brad Pitt.

Just to give you a taste of the book, there is a scene in which a crowd riots and destroys a mansion that is occupied by Bill Maher, Paris Hilton and Lil' Wayne. It is ultra-cool.
