White knights are people who offer help to others—motivated by classic virtue signaling. But there is a fair amount of white knighting done by men superficially defending other perceived inferior or weaker people (even possibly other men), such as politicians white knighting to insincerely "protect" minorities just in order to get their votes whether the minorities actually need the protection or not. Judges will often white knight to help women win in divorce cases against men even without evidence that the woman has actually been wronged in any way.
